Rob McCormack from Christchurch has no regrets about splashing out $26,000 at a charity auction for three hot laps in Tony Quinn’s Aston Martin Vulcan. The real estate agent from Christchurch turned up at Hampton Downs yesterday to claim his prize and the self confessed car nut was blown away by the experience.
“I’ve been in a lot of fast cars but that was simply breathtaking,” said McCormack who owns Harcourts Grenadier in Christchurch. “It’s a true race car. It’s tight, the brakes are unbelievable and the acceleration and speed down the back straight was phenomenal. I’ve owned some unbelievable cars myself but that was a bit special.”
McCormack won the auction for a ride in the $4.3m Vulcan at a Harcourts event recently.
“I probably drank a little more than I should have and when the ride in the Vulcan came up for auction I paid a little more for it than I should have,” says McCormack. “I actually hid when they started the auction but the buggers came and found me! I woke up in the middle of the night and thought ‘what have I done,’ but it was worth every penny. I’ve worked hard and done well for myself so to be able to give something back to a worthwhile charity like the Halberg Trust and get a spin around a race track in a car like that was a bonus.”
Australian Supercars star Craig Lowndes will get behind the wheel of the Vulcan on Saturday and Sunday. Anyone who pre-purchased a ticket for this weekend’s Hampton Downs 101 went in a draw to win hot laps in the Vulcan
