Sch A 4 A & B

A:        Competitors’ Apparel

4.1       Protective Helmets:

(1)      All occupants of vehicles entered in any of the following Events shall wear protective helmets;

(a)      Sporting Trials, Regularity Trials, Speed Events, or

(b)      Races, or

(c)      Rallies, and

(d)      Any practice sessions for the above.

MotorSport NZ recommends the use of full-face helmets complete with visors. Should a competitor choose to use an open face helmet, then goggles or a visor manufactured from shatterproof material shall be used (not required in vehicles equipped with a full size windscreen).

(2)      Requirements: Protective helmets shall;

(a)      Comply with a current approved standard,

(b)      Be a good fit on the wearer so they are secure when worn,

(c)      Be in good condition, and

(d)      Not be modified, except as specifically permitted by the helmet manufacturer, in particular;

(i)       ABS and Polycarbonate helmets shall not be painted,

(ii)      Composite shell helmets may only be painted with a paint approved by the helmet manufacturer,

(iii)     Intercom earphones and microphones should only be fitted in helmets specifically designed for their fitting. In all cases when fitting speaker(s) care must be taken to ensure that they do not create a hazard for the wearer.

(3)      Helmet Fit Test: The helmet must not be able to be removed by lifting the back of the helmet. (Refer drawing 4.1.1)

(4)      Approved Standards:

(a)      International Events: Vehicle occupants shall wear protective helmets approved to any of the following standards:

·                Snell Foundation Inc;

Snell SA 2005

Snell SA 2000.

·                SFI Foundation Inc;

SFI Spec 31.1A (open face design), or

SFI spec 31.2A (closed face design)

·                British Standards Institute;

BS6658-85 type A/FR (red label), including all amendments.

4.2       Protective Clothing:

(1)      All occupants of vehicles entered in any of the following Events shall wear protective clothing:

(a)      Sporting Trials, Regularity Trials, Speed Events; and,

(b)      Races; and,

(c)      Rallies; and,

(d)      Any practice session for the above.

(2)      International Events: Competitors are required to wear protective clothing that has current FIA standards approval number. 8856-2000 (Refer to FIA Technical List No 27)

(3)      National and higher permit status Race and Rally Events: Vehicle occupants shall wear:

(a)      Overalls, either;

(i)       Multi-layer one piece design – of an approved type, or

(ii)      Single layer, one-piece design – (worn in combination with heat resistant underwear), with close-fitting front, cuffs and ankles, manufactured in approved fire-retardant materials. Underwear must be heat-resistant, wrist to neck to ankles, and of woollen or other approved materials, and

(b)      Socks – wool or other fire-retardant material, and

(c)      Footwear – fire-retardant boots or shoes that completely enclose the feet, and

(d)      Gloves – manufactured in approved fire-retardant material (mandatory for Single Seater drivers and recommended for all other competition).

(4)      All Other Events: Vehicle occupants shall wear:

(a)      Overalls – clean protective one-piece, with close-fitting front, cuffs and ankles and manufactured only in fire retardant or self-extinguishing materials, and

Notes:

1.   Pure cotton is deemed to be self-extinguishing for the purpose of this rule.

2.   The performance of ‘treated’ apparel (eg Proban, Pyrovatex) may be reduced by incorrect laundering. The manufacturers instructions for washing or laundering should always be followed.

(b)      Footwear – suitable footwear that provides complete coverage of both feet.

(5)      Non-approved clothing: No apparel of flammable material (e.g., nylon or similar synthetics) may be worn. Two-piece overalls are not approved.

(6)      Recommendations: It is strongly recommended that all vehicle occupants wear:

·                Gloves – of approved fire-resistant materials

·                Balaclava – in fire resistant material

·                Helmet bib – in fire resistant material

·                Neck brace – in fire resistant material

Clothing and footwear: All team personnel are required to wear closed footwear and it is recommended that clothing at least provides limited protection from fire (e.g. cotton, wool based or fire retardant material) is worn.

Minimum age: Children under 16 years of age except competitors are not permitted in these areas.
