New Motorsport Complex for New Zealand
New Zealand is to have a new Motorsport complex comprising three sealed circuits, purpose-built garages, industrial units and trackside apartments to service the needs of modern-day Motorsport. Construction started 23/2/07 and the track should be completed within two years.
The circuit, which will be called Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, is located near the current Meremere drag strip and oval, in the North Waikato, just South of Auckland.
The plan has been to build a modern Motorsport complex to complement the existing facilities and raise the profile of Motorsport in New Zealand.
The goal is to build an entertainment venue for the promotion of Motor Racing in New Zealand. A venue that is that is superior to any other in New Zealand and reflects a modern approach to circuit design and associated amenities. Hampton Downs Motorsport Park will be a road in a park concept with a strong ecology friendly theme including extensive tree planting. There will be an emphasis on driver training and a testing facility. At circuit-side there will be apartment/motel units with two car garaging beneath and a balcony overlooking the race track. The pits will have extensive garaging with corporate boxes above, while a tunnel entrance will allow for unimpeded access at all times to the infield pit area. There will be industrial units to support the Motorsport Park activities. Many other sporting activities can be catered for on this extensive land holding and our vision is to assist as many of these as possible.
The positioning of the new Corrections Dept facility and the nearby Landfill at Hampton Downs has altered the existing rural flavour of the area and made a Motorsport Park an ideal neighbour. Add to this the pre-existing Motorsport presence of the Drag Strip and oval circuits at Meremere, and the reason for this site become even more evident. The Hampton Downs site has all the required attributes for a Motorsport Park. In terms of land area, access and topographical contour, the 400-acre site (already purchased) is eminently suitable for the establishment of a circuit and many other facilities. The land is balanced between rolling hills and extensive flat areas.
The new State Highway One Expressway directly from Central Auckland and a similar upgrading from Hamilton ensure ready access to the Park in only forty minutes from either city. Hampton Downs Rd intersection with its new overbridge ensures easy access to the venue with little disruption to access the car parks. Hampton Downs Motorsport Park straddles a population base of over two million people.
